Description
EN1177 Certified Safety Grass Mats — Playground Safety Surface | 1.0m × 1.5m
BS EN 1177:2018 certified playground safety mats with a realistic artificial grass upper surface. These 1.0m × 1.5m mats combine the safety credentials of a certified impact-attenuating surface with the natural appearance of a grass finish — making them the preferred choice for schools, nurseries and garden play areas where aesthetics matter as much as compliance. Available in 23mm (up to 0.6m CFH) and 16mm (up to 0.4m CFH) thicknesses, with or without ground pegs and ties.

Choosing the Right Thickness

|---|---|---|
| 23mm | Up to 0.6m | Low swings, balance beams, toddler equipment, sensory trails |
| 16mm | Up to 0.4m | Crawl-through tunnels, stepping stones, very low equipment only |
Always match the mat thickness to the highest accessible point on your equipment. If in doubt, choose the thicker option. For equipment with accessible heights above 0.6m, see our EN1177 certified rubber playground tiles in 30mm, 40mm, or 50mm.
EN1177 Compliance Documentation
All EN1177 certified products are supplied with a test certificate from an accredited UK testing laboratory confirming the Critical Fall Height. This documentation is required by Ofsted for school inspections and by most local authority procurement frameworks. Request a copy with your order or contact us before purchasing if you need documentation in advance for tender submissions.
Installation
Lay on short-mown grass or compacted earth, cleared of stones and debris. Secure with ground pegs through the mat anchoring holes at 500mm centres around the perimeter. For safety-critical playground installations, secure internal mat joins with ties. Ensure full EN1177 fall zone coverage — minimum 1.5m beyond equipment on all sides. Grass will grow through the mat openings over time, improving appearance.
Maintenance
Inspect pegs and ties termly in school environments. Re-secure any that have worked loose. Remove leaf and debris accumulation from the mat surface. Annual inspection by a Registered Playground Inspector (RPII) is recommended for public and school installations.

INSTALLATION
EN1177 certified grass mats are suitable for playground safety zones, garden play areas, and nature play spaces. Clear the area of stones and debris. Mow grass short or prepare a level base. Lay mats with the grass side up, butted tightly together. For permanent installations, secure with the supplied ground pegs and ties through the mat anchoring holes around the perimeter. For play area use, mats must cover the full EN1177 fall zone around all play equipment. Overlap joins slightly on sloped ground to prevent gaps.
MAINTENANCE
Remove leaves and debris regularly — blocked drainage holes can cause waterlogging. Hose down periodically. Real grass will grow through the mat openings over time — this is normal and improves the natural appearance. Trim any grass that grows above the mat surface. Inspect pegs and ties seasonally and re-secure any that have worked loose.
